A Messge from Our Founder…

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:

I have always loved the concept of showing our love with time, talent and treasures. It’s an easy concept. Living with gratitude for the gifts we were given. As we journey into Fall, let’s reflect and take inventory on this concept. Where are we spending your time? How do we apply your talents at home, at work, and in your community? How are we at living with the feeling of abundance and sharing your treasures?

Of course, it is back to school and I am focused on how you can put your treasures to work for good. Let’s look at it from a few angles. Research famously shows that annually, some people spend more on things like Starbucks than they donate to charity. How can we reduce our daily indulgences to give just a little more?  Do we really need that trip to Starbucks or Ross, or another pair of shoes?

And then there is the… you can’t take it with you statement. It’s a little morbid, but has a point. Many of us live with financial fears—some real and some created. I work at Homeboy Industries with people who have nothing. No one should live like that. But do we have too much? Maybe we are too abundant.

The other way to look at it is from the perspective of just being one person who wants to make a difference, but needs a larger community to help with this vision. The change the world angle, one step at a time. That’s us! One young person at a time….with a very focused mission….everyone deserves a chance to earn a high school diploma. Learning Works serves youth that were born in poverty conditions that resulted in becoming a teen parent, homelessness, entering foster care, substance abuse, and juvenile delinquency. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Education is the key to getting out of poverty.

As we begin school, Learning Works needs support and more for our field trip program, full-time tutors, mental health services and supports. Every dollar donated goes directly to support our students. Also, mark your calendar for our fundraiser, Invest in a Dropout—A Wicked Good Time on October 24th from 6 – 9 p.m. Join us!

Thank you for all you do for us!

Sincerely,

Dr. Mikala Rahn
